USA Fencing Ratings in AskFRED

A quick primer on how USA Fencing ratings are handled in the New AskFRED

AskFRED has two tiers of USA Fencing ratings in our platform - officially reported USA Fencing ratings, and self-reported ratings.

USA Fencing Ratings

If your Fencer profile has a USA Fencing membership number attached to it, AskFRED will regularly update your membership information, including your rating. The system that AskFRED uses to fetch this information is different than what most people will see on the "Membership Search" part of USA Fencing's site. Which means, sometimes we see something different or delayed. To address discrepancies, you can refresh your data manually by navigating to the USA Fencing membership card in your AskFRED Dashboard and clicking the Refresh button to pull the latest information.

If your rating was changed on USA Fencing's site but doesn't show up on AskFRED in a few days, please reach out to support to diagnose the issue.Additionally, check your AskFRED profile to ensure your USA Fencing membership number is properly linked. If data appears outdated, manually refresh your profile using the USA Fencing membership card, or verify whether the event results were reported properly to USA Fencing. If the updated rating is still not visible on USA Fencing, contact the event's organizer or division authority to confirm and rectify reporting.

Additionally, if a membership is present on your Fencer profile when you register for a USA Fencing sanctioned event, we will send your USA Fencing validated date to the registration instead of anything self-reported or AskFRED-updated. This will result in a green "data validated" checkmark on the registration page. If your USA Fencing membership updates, we'll update the information on your registration at the same time so that this information is always up to date.

Note that this means your Fencer profile might have a rating coming from USA Fencing that is different than the one self-reported or automatically updated by AskFRED when unofficial results are processed. This is expected. If there are visible discrepancies in tournament rating estimates (e.g., switching to older or incorrect values), it could be due to cached data from event pages. Refresh the event page to clear the cache and check for the updated calculation. If refreshing doesn't resolve the issue immediately, revisit the page later as the cache may take time to update.

AskFRED Ratings

AskFRED also allows you select your own rating on your Fencer profile. AskFRED will use this rating if you register for any non-USA Fencing sanctioned events, and it will also use this rating if you register for a USA Fencing sanctioned event but do not have a USA Fencing membership attached to your Fencer profile. This rating is set by the user, and also updates itself when Tournament Organizers upload results to AskFRED that include a rating change.

When you register for a Tournament using an AskFRED rating, the registration will NOT update when you change your profile or your profile is otherwise changed. This is to better enable support for various tournament and sanctioning authority formats and requirements, and is also done to prevent bad behavior present in the Old AskFRED system.
