Old AskFRED had Points Lists - the New AskFRED version of this functionality is called Leagues.

The New AskFRED Leagues are valid for one season. When displaying the League Leaderboard on the public site, we only ever display the current season's leagues, although you can set up and manage your own Leagues for other seasons privately.

Starting a League

Getting stared is fairly simple:

Create a League in the Bout Committee area.

When you create a League, you can select the way the points earned per event are calculated and the way the results are calculated. You can also set your League to be visible or not.

Points Rulesets

Points Rulesets determine how points are awarded for each event fenced. Right now, we only offer one Points Ruleset, but will be expanding to more soon.

The "Regional" Points Ruleset uses the same formula that most USA Fencing Regional events use for their points: ((#entries โ€“ place +1) / #entries) x 100. The goal of this ruleset is to grant points to all competitors uniformly based on where they placed. The first place fencer can always expect to earn 100 points, and the last place fencer can always expect to earn a few points depending on how many entrants were present (usually around 5). You might use this if you want to encourage people to fence more events, as no matter what they will earn points in the League.

The "Birmingham" Points Ruleset uses a custom USA Fencing specific formula that multiplies the points awarded by the strength of the tournament: (level * (#entries - place + 1 ) ^ 1.6 / #entries) where level = 6 if the event is A-rated (A1 through A4), level = 5 for B, and so on down to 1. The goal of this ruleset is similar to the previous ruleset, except to also increase the amount of points awarded for events that end up being strong enough to award higher ratings.

The "Place Above Rated Fencers" (PARF) Points Ruleset uses a ruleset that grants you more points the higher you place in your event and the more rated fencers you place ahead of. Each fencer in the event is awarded a value based on their rating. U=2, E=3, D=4, C=5, B=6, A=7. The number of points you earn in the event equals the total value of all the fencers who finish below you, plus 2 points.

Results Rulesets

Results Rulesets determine how the Points fencers earn at events get summed up to determine the leaderboard.

The "Best3" or "Best of 3" Results Ruleset takes the fencer's 3 best results and sums them up to determine the leaderboard rankings. You might use this if you want to encourage people to do their best at your events.

The "Total" Results Ruleset takes the sum total of all results to determine leaderboard rankings. You might use this if you want to encourage people to fence more events, as every event fenced counts in the rankings.

Double Points

You can also optionally configure an event to award double points. This is a checkbox in the same League configuration area. If you check this box, the exact same formula is applied, except the outcome of the formula is simply multiplied by two. This is in place for things like championships events, or extra strong events that you feel should award more points.

Add Events to the League

Once the League is created, you can add an Event to the League when creating or editing the Event. Its one of the properties of an Event, just like the Weapon is.

Adding events to a League will automatically generate a Points List page based on the parameters of the Event (i.e., "Senior", "Mixed", "Epee"). All you have to do is add the Event to the League and then upload results. The Points Lists will become visible on the public-facing League page automatically, and/or new events will automatically show up on the Leaderboard if one already exists.

Note that different event types will generate different Points Lists. If you have a "Senior Mixed Epee" and a "Div2 Senior Mixed Epee", this will create two different Points Lists. A third would be created for a "Senior Men's Epee" if you configured an event in this way. In this way, Points Lists are populated by all events of the exact same entry restriction conditions.

"Completing" Leagues

Leagues effectively end once the season rolls over (i.e., August 1st). Otherwise, the League is complete when you decide it to be complete. You can continue to add more Events to it over the season as you create and hold them. Events only show up on the Leaderboard once results are submitted.
