AskFRED and PayPal

Written by Mitchell Lane

AskFRED's PayPal integration is in an open Beta. This means that it is available for general use, but it is still very new. It might still have bugs and be functionally incomplete. However, it is far enough along and tested enough that we feel comfortable saying people can use it for regular tournament registrations at this point in time.

Just like Stripe, if you connect a PayPal account, we will immediately grant you Bout Committee access for the duration of your PayPal account being in good standing. If your PayPal account loses good standing, your access will be revoked.

You can connect any type of PayPal account - your fees will depend on the configuration of your account.

Limitations and Differences from Stripe

The following are known limitations and differences from the current Stripe integration on AskFRED. These limitations might be resolved by the time our PayPal integration exits Beta:

You can connect both Stripe and PayPal. HOWEVER, only one payment method can be active for a tournament at one time. Your event can either accept Stripe, or PayPal. Not both. You can change payment methods up until your first payment comes in. Afterwards, you are locked into that payment method for the duration of the tournament.

Our PayPal integration currently does not support multiple charges/payments for a single registration. For a user to add extra additional events to their registration after they have paid initially, they currently will need to be fully refunded and re-register with the correct events. This is different from our Stripe integration, which allows for multiple charges, which allows for someone to register for a second event after already having registered for one. We intend on addressing this issue fairly quickly, but this is a clear, known technical limitation for PayPal, and to address this we'll need to completely rethink our registration flow. Coming soon.

Please note that most PayPal payment notification emails will be delivered to your inbox with the email addresses of the payers included. This email is simply associated with the PayPal account who made the payment. It is possible for this address to not be directly related or deliver emails to the person who actually registered (i.e., a child using a parent's PayPal account). We strongly recommend using the in-AskFRED tools for communication and email gathering if applicable to prevent issues where some fencers aren't correctly getting communications from you.
